From Knowledge to Impact: Delivering Technical Presentations That Make a Difference A White Paper by Laurie Brown, CSP

The Problem Every Technical Expert Faces

You are an expert. You have spent years developing deep knowledge in your field. But when it comes time to share that expertise with an audience — whether peers, executives, clients, or the general public — technical knowledge alone isn't enough. Unintended noise and clutter in presentations can turn a clear, impactful message into something muddled and confusing, leaving your audience scratching their heads instead of nodding in agreement.

From Knowledge to Impact gives technical professionals a proven system for closing that gap.

The Knowledge to Impact System

The system is built on three equally important filters. Only when all three work together can a technical expert move from knowledge to genuine impact.

Research — Become an Audience Member Expert Most technical presenters focus entirely on subject matter expertise, but equally critical is what Laurie calls being an Audience Member Expert (AME). Before writing a single slide, you need to understand who is in your audience, why they are there, what they already know, what they expect to gain, and what biases or preconceptions they bring. This knowledge fundamentally changes how you structure, write, and deliver your presentation.

Audiences generally fall into four types: those with no knowledge of your topic but open to learning; peers who want new information from you; people with an opposing point of view; and high-level executives who want you to get to the point immediately and leave room for questions.

Translate — Remove the Noise and Clutter Translating your message means stripping out everything that gets between your signal and your audience's understanding. This includes eliminating unexplained acronyms, replacing jargon with plain language, calibrating the right level of detail, using vivid analogies to bridge knowledge gaps, and telling stories that make technical concepts stick.

Simplifying your message is not dumbing it down — it is making your expertise accessible. Build on what your audience already knows rather than what they don't.

Deliver — Command the Room Even a perfectly researched and translated message can fail in delivery. Nervousness, body language, vocal habits, and poorly designed slides all add noise. The Deliver section covers relaxation and breathing techniques, purposeful movement and gesture, meaningful eye contact, vocal quality and pausing, PowerPoint best practices, and effective use of handouts.

A key principle: one idea per slide. Cluttered slides dilute your message and invite your audience to read ahead rather than listen to you.
